Thinking about hosting an Open House in your home?  There are a few things you should know before you have your agent put out signs, buy balloons and bake cookies.  Here are the Do’s and Don’ts for hosting an Open House:

Do, remove all vehicles from your driveway.  Think of your potential buyers as house guests and let them have the most valued spot in your driveway.

Don’t, use air fresheners.   Synthetic odors can cause allergic reactions for some people.  Instead, bake some chocolate chip cookies or simmer some spices on your stovetop.  Better yet, open your windows, to let the fresh air in.

Do, open all drapes, blinds, curtains, and turn on lights.  Bright fresh light will give your home a warm and cozy feeling.

Don’t, leave pets behind.  Take your pets out of the house during your Open House.  As cute and cuddly as they may be,  they could be a big distraction.

Do, hide or remove your valuables, medications, and personal items from your home.

Don’t, forget to spread the word!  Marketing should be done by your agent, however spreading the word through social media, or email could reach more people and potential buyers.

Do, set out documents pertaining to the house including, repair invoices, warranties, inspection reports, or blueprints for additions or improvements.

Don’t, stick around.  Let your agent host your Open House.  This will keep you from shadowing potential buyers

Do, make your home spotless.  Clean, de-clutter, and make updates before your Open House.
